Handford apparently already had a talent for drawing crowd scenes but the addition of Wally was to add a focal point for the page. Handford admits to being fascinated by crowds and each picture takes many months to draw with Wally inserted along the way, “As I work my way through a picture, I add Wally when I come to what I feel is a good place to hide him.” Handford explains.ģ0 years later and the Where’s Wally books have sold over 70 million copies worldwide in 31 different languages. The idea for Wally came about in 1986 when his publisher, Walker Books, was intrigued by the little-known French illustrator Philippe Dupasquier and wanted to create an idea to take to that year's Bologna bookfair. Handford spent much of his childhood drawing and after Art College began working as a freelance illustrator. Where is Wally is a challenge which can take kids (and adults) a while to find! Once you start, it's very addictive but thankfully there's a handy, travel-sized Where's Wally book set too. Handford likes to make things a little tricky by adding other characters who have some (but not all!) of these elements. Each book is made up of incredibly intricate, double-page scenes, with the challenge to find Wally in his iconic bobble hat, round glasses and red stripy t-shirt on every page. Where's Wally? is a series of search and find books from British illustrator, Martin Handford.
